Interior Moves To Ramp Up Geothermal Production

Law360, New York (October 23, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of the Interior announced Wednesday that it would open up more than 190 million acres of federal land in 12 western states for the development of geothermal energy.

If the plan comes to fruition, it is expected to produce 5,540 megawatts of electricity by 2015, or enough to power about 5.5 million homes. The plan estimates that an additional 6,000 megawatts of electricity will be produced by 2025.
