University, Nektar Settle Patent Feud For $25M

Law360, New York (July 7, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Ending a dispute over biotech patents worth millions of dollars, the University of Alabama reached a $25 million settlement this week with biotechnology company Nektar Therapeutics in a case that highlighted the importance of clear rules concerning who owns academic inventions.

The San Carlos, Calif.-based company, which develops drug delivery systems, said in a statement that the University of Alabama in Huntsville had agreed to dismiss its claims against Nektar and former UAH professor Milton Harris in exchange for $15 million, with an additional $10 million...
