FTC Detects Cancer Screening Monopoly

Law360, New York (July 7, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint Friday against Hologic Inc., saying the medical device maker’s $32 million purchase of rival Fischer Imaging Corp.’s breast cancer screening business would harm consumers by eliminating the only significant competition.

However, the FTC also filed a consent decree along with the suit, meaning the charges were dropped after Hologic agreed to sell its assets related to prone stereotactic breast biopsy systems to Siemens AG within the next five days.
