Virgin Islands Cleanup Settlement Nixed By Judge

Law360, New York (October 24, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- After hearing objections from other potentially responsible parties including Alcoa Inc. and Lockheed Martin Corp., a judge has refused to approve a consent decree between the U.S. Virgin Islands government and St. Croix Renaissance Group LLLP over the cleanup of two Superfund sites in the territory.

Renaissance had reached an agreement with the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources, which filed the suit in 2005, to pay $300,000 toward cleanup of the sites, a refinery and alumina facility in St. Croix, Virgin Islands,...
