EU Council OKs Cap On Airplane Emissions

Law360, New York (October 24, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Union's 27 governments formally adopted a plan on Friday to include the aviation industry in the bloc's emissions trading scheme, set to take effect in 2012.

Under the directive approved in the European Council, flights landing in and departing from an EU airport will have to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 3 percent by Jan. 1, 2012 to comply with the EU's greenhouse gas emissions trading plan.

Any operator that flies to or from Europe will have to comply with its emissions trading...
