Group Petitions FDA To Ban Avandia

Law360, New York (October 31, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Consumer group Public Citizen is calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to immediately ban GlaxoSmithKline PLC's Avandia, saying it has identified 14 cases of liver failure related to use of the diabetes drug, 12 of which resulted in deaths.

The organization said in a petition filed Thursday with the agency that Avandia can cause death from liver failure and has many other life-threatening risks that far outweigh its benefits, warranting the drug's removal from the market.
