Linux Backers Fund Legal Defense

Law360, New York (January 12, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Industry group Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) has set up a legal fund that will help companies running Linux software defray the cost of defending themselves against intellectual property related lawsuits.

Funded by contributors such as Intel Corp. and IBM, the fund has received $3 million in pledges and is seeking $7 million more. OSDL members include Alcatel, Cisco, Computer Associates, Dell, EricssonFujitsu, HP, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC Corporation, Network Appliance, Nokia, Novell, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Toshiba, Transmeta Corporation and Unilever.
