Six Years After Wyeth Debacle, Birth Control Rod OK'd

Law360 (July 18, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- U.S. government officials have granted their approval to Organon USA’s contraceptive Implanon, clearing the company to sell the first birth control rod in the United States since Wyeth withdrew a similar product six years ago.

A rod-shaped contraceptive about the size of a matchstick, Implanon is implanted in the upper arm for up to three years, after which time it must be removed and another one implanted. The rod can be removed by a doctor at any time.
