Australia, New Zealand Join Forces To Review Mergers

Law360, New York (July 24, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In an effort to remove barriers between their economies, the competition watchdogs for Australia and New Zealand have agreed to join forces to examine mergers of companies that operate in both countries.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the New Zealand Commerce Commission (NZCC) said the joint review plan for transnational mergers comes on the heels of an earlier agreement this year between Michael Cullen, New Zealand’s finance minister, and Peter Costello, Australia’s treasurer, to clear up hurdles between the two economies.
