Pa. Unclaimed Property Suit Could Spur Delaware Pile-On

By Dan Packel (March 14, 2016, 6:25 PM EDT) -- A federal lawsuit by Pennsylvania's treasurer pressuring Delaware to turn over more than $10 million from uncashed prepaid checks issued by MoneyGram could prompt many other states to follow suit and illuminates the challenges that businesses face from a continued lack of clarity in nationwide unclaimed property laws.

In the complaint filed last month in Pennsylvania federal court, the treasurer accused the Delaware state escheator of violating state and federal law by instructing the payment services giant to hand over the value of unclaimed checks issued in Pennsylvania.
