Brazilian Citrus Cos. Bristle At Proposed $45M Fine

Law360, New York (July 27, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a bid to settle a long-running investigation into five of Brazil’s largest orange juice exporters, the country’s antitrust watchdog is pushing a $45.87 million fine on the companies. Antitrust charges could be revived if the exporters refuse to accept the deal.

The settlement, proposed Wednesday by Brazil's Justice Ministry, came in response to allegations that citrus exporters Citrosuco, Coimbra, Cutrale, Citrovita and Montecitrus formed an illegal cartel and fixed the prices paid to orange growers, according to Dow Jones.
