Phthalates In Hair Spray Linked To Birth Defects

Law360, New York (November 26, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A new study released earlier this month links exposure to phthalates in hair spray with a nearly doubled risk of reproductive birth defects.

Researchers at Imperial College London studied women who had given birth to boys with hypospadias, a reproductive defect that causes the urinary tract to develop on the underside of the penis. The defect has been on the rise since the 1960s.

The study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, suggested that hair spray exposure more than doubled the risk of the defect....
