Schnitzer Steel To Face Suit Over Stormwater Runoff

Law360, New York (December 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- An Oregon environmental group has said it plans to sue Schnitzer Steel Products Co., claiming the company allowed stormwater runoff from its scrapyard near Portland Harbor to pollute the Willamette River with high levels of copper, zinc, lead and other contaminants.

In an intent-to-sue letter dated Thursday, the Northwest Environmental Defense Center alleges the Portland-based metals recycler has violated the Clean Water Act by failing to meet benchmarks in its state stormwater permit regarding the levels of contaminants it dumps in the river.
