12,000 Legal Jobs Cut In Past Year: Labor Dept.

Law360, New York (December 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The economic downturn has resulted in the loss of nearly 12,000 jobs in the legal services industry in the past year, according to statistics released by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The agency's Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday in numbers posted to its Web site that jobs in the legal sector — including nonlawyer positions — dipped to 1,163,500 this year as compared with 1,175,200 in November 2007.

Between October and November of this year alone, such losses totaled 2,200, the agency said.
