High Court To Consider Valdez Oil Tanker Tax

Law360, New York (December 15, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear a dispute between the city of Valdez and a tanker company that claims the city’s tax on oil tankers is unconstitutional.

The high court granted certiorari to Polar Tankers Inc., which argues that Valdez violates three provisions of the U.S. Constitution by extending its property tax to cover oil tankers for the days the vessels are in harbor waters, where they load up from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System terminal.
