Fed. Circ. Revives Ricoh, Quanta Tech Patent Fight

By Jacqueline Bell (December 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has handed a victory to Ricoh Co. Ltd., reinvigorating the company's patent battle with Quanta Computer Inc. over optical disc drive technology for computers.

The lower court had dismissed all of Ricoh's claims against Quanta. The Federal Circuit's decision issued Dec. 23 will essentially reboot at least part of the case.

The Federal Circuit reversed a portion of the lower court's ruling and remanded the case to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

There are four patents-at-issue in the case: U.S. Patent Numbers 6,631,109; 6,172,955; 5,063,552; and 6,661,755....
