Mercedes-Benz Fined $28.9M For CAFE Violations

Law360 (January 7, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- Mercedes-Benz USA LLC reportedly forked over a $28.9 million fine in December for violating federal fuel efficiency requirements, marking the second-highest payout ever assessed by the U.S. government for such violations.

The U.S. division of Mercedes-Benz paid the fine for imported passenger cars from the 2007 model year, the Associated Press reported Tuesday, citing documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The company did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
