Lawyers' Outlook Bleak As Job Numbers Drop

Law360 (January 12, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics report on employment came with the unnerving yet inescapable realization that the legal industry has become a victim of the economic downturn.

The agency said in a report released Friday that the legal services industry had lost about 7,000 jobs between December 2007 and December 2008.

In December 2007, 1.176 million people worked in the industry, according to the DOL. A year later, preliminary numbers showed 1.169 million people working in the field.
