Sens. Issue Warning On Proposed Airline Alliances

Law360, New York (January 13, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- Lawmakers have reportedly expressed concern about the antitrust implications of requests by American Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. to form separate alliances with foreign carriers.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the U.S. Senate's Judiciary Committee, wrote a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters in December, warning that close scrutiny is needed to ensure that the pacts do not harm competition or push prices up for customers, according to various news reports this week.
