Congressman Introduces Bill To Regulate Fly Ash

Law360 (January 15, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- A congressman from West Virginia has introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to regulate coal ash waste three weeks after a rupture at a Tennessee Valley Authority dam unleashed an avalanche of sludge covering hundreds of acres.

Rep. Nick Rahall, who heads the House Natural Resources Committee, said Wednesday the bill would provide a basic level of safety for communities near such waste repositories.

"It is impossible to write off the disaster in Tennessee as a freak accident," Rahall said.
