Court Upholds New Orleans' Domestic Partner Policy

Law360 (January 20, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- A Louisiana state appeals court has affirmed the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging the city of New Orleans' policy of granting health insurance and other benefits to unmarried domestic partners of city employees, including those in same-sex relationships.

Judge Joan Bernard Armstrong of the Court of Appeal of Louisiana, Fourth Circuit, on Thursday affirmed a lower state court's decision granting the city summary judgment that its benefit policy for domestic partners, first passed in 1993, is legal.
