OSHA Begins Rulemaking On 'Popcorn Lung' Chemical

Law360 (January 20, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- After years of prodding from politicians, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has begun the process of establishing rules for dealing with diacetyl, a butter flavoring often used in microwave popcorn that has been linked to serious lung problems.

OSHA will print an "advance notice of proposed rulemaking" on occupational exposure to diacetyl in Wednesday's edition of the Federal Register, the agency said in a statement.
