FDA Fishes For Answers On Methylmercury

Law360, New York (January 21, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released two new documents to address whether the benefits of regular fish consumption outweigh the risks associated with methylmercury, which include fetal development issues, coronary disease and strokes.

On Wednesday, the agency unveiled the reports, with the first devoted to investigating the “quantitative risk and benefit assessment of commercial fish consumption, focusing on fetal neurodevelopmental effects (measured by verbal development in children) and on coronary heart disease and stroke in the general population.”
