Studebaker Successor Liable For Cleanup Costs: SC

Law360 (January 26, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Indiana Supreme Court has ruled that Cooper Industries LLC, the successor to the long-dissolved Studebaker Corp., along with insurers of Studebaker, can be held liable for potentially tens of millions of dollars in cleanup costs for a massive industrial site.

On Thursday, the Indiana Supreme Court affirmed a lower court’s ruling allowing the City of South Bend to pursue a state environmental legal action statute against Cooper, which merged with the successor of the former wagon and automobile manufacturer Studebaker in 2004.
