FDA's Protection Powers 'Hampered': GAO

Law360 (January 26, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- In the latest stinging rebuke to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Government Accountability Office says the agency's ability to protect Americans from unsafe and ineffective products has been compromised, making it one of the “high-risk” federal government areas in dire need of improvement.

The GAO said in a report to Congress released Thursday that its ongoing investigation of the FDA had confirmed widespread concerns about the agency's ability to fulfill its mission of ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, biologics and medical devices....
