Oil Cos. Slam Rhode Island's Gasoline Pollution Suit
Law360, New York (December 16, 2016, 8:12 PM EST) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., ConocoPhillips Co. and a long list of other companies urged a Rhode Island federal judge to toss a lawsuit brought by the Ocean State over alleged contamination from a gasoline additive, saying the "vague and speculative assertions" shouldn't be entertained by the court.
Rhode Island's suit, filed in September, accuses nearly three dozen oil, chemical and refining companies of peddling gasoline containing methyl tertiary-butyl ether, or MTBE, despite knowing that the additive threatened water supplies.
