After eight years, we said goodbye to the nation's first African-American president. His farewell address used graceful oratory once more to call upon the highest ideals of our democracy. Ten days later, we witnessed the inauguration of a new president who defied history in a different way — having never held elective office, ignoring convention, and tweeting to our darkest emotions. In between, we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr., whose legacy, almost 50 years after his assassination, hangs somewhere in the balance between these two administrations. Obama is eager to resurrect a key to King's unfinished work that President Trump seems equally eager to bury: love....
