Pa. DEP Links Fracking To Earthquakes Near Hilcorp Well

Law360, Philadelphia (February 17, 2017, 4:42 PM EST) -- Pennsylvania environmental regulators made a first-of-its-kind announcement for the state on Friday when they correlated a string of small earthquakes in Lawrence County to nearby hydraulic fracturing operations being carried out by Hilcorp Energy Co.

The state’s Department of Environmental Protection said in a report that seismic activity registered in three townships last April showed a marked temporal and spatial relationship to Hilcorp’s fracking, and that steps were warranted to try and prevent future earthquakes.

A DEP spokeswoman confirmed that it was the first time the department had ever correlated fracking with seismic activity in the state.
