Bill Would Mandate More Flexible-Fuel Cars

Law360 (March 16, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., has introduced a bill that would require automobile companies to manufacture many more flexible-fuel vehicles as a way of reducing the country's dependence on foreign oil.

The bill, known as the Open Fuel Standard Act, would require at least half of all new vehicles sold in the United States to operate on fuel mixtures containing 85 percent ethanol, 85 percent methanol or biodiesel, starting in 2012.
