Japanese Court Rules For Czech Brewer In Battle Over Budweiser Trademark

Law360 (February 9, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Japan’s highest court dealt Anheuser-Busch a blow in the U.S. brewer’s long-running global trademark battle with Czech rival Budejovicky Budvar.

Japan's Supreme Court upheld Budvar's rights to the “Bud” trademark, according to local news reports.

The court also gave Budvar's trading company in Japan the right to use the name Budweiser Budvar N.C.

But Anheuser-Busch said the court’s decision would have no impact on its marketing in the Japanese market. The U.S. brewer claimed it has exclusive rights to the Budweiser trademark in Japan.
