Synopsys Asks Full Fed. Circ. To Rehear $36M Patent Case

Law360, New York (May 2, 2017, 8:09 PM EDT) -- Synopsys Inc. has asked the full Federal Circuit to rehear a case in which it was ordered to pay a rival $36 million for infringing patents on computer emulator technology, saying on Monday that a new rule that was made for calculating lost profits damages violates legal precedent.

The company’s petition for en banc rehearing comes about six weeks after a three-judge panel for the appeals court, in a complex 42-page opinion, upheld a jury’s 2014 finding that Synopsys infringed Mentor Graphics Corp.’s patent and found that the damages award was appropriate.
