Green Groups Seek To Force US To Protect Whales

Law360 (March 18, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A coalition of environmental groups has filed suit to force federal regulators to uphold protections for false killer whales in Hawaii and limit the commercial fishing practices that threaten the island’s dwindling whale population.

The complaint, lodged Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii, claims the National Marine Fisheries Service has failed to fulfill its duties under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, allowing the controversial practice of longline fishing to continue despite calls for the agency’s intervention.
