China Defends Decision To Block Coca-Cola Merger

Law360, New York (March 27, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- China's antitrust regulators have come out in defense of a decision they made earlier this month to reject Coca-Cola Co.'s proposed $2.5 billion acquisition of Chinese juice giant China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd.

A spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce denied accusations that the decision to reject the deal was based on protectionist sentiment, not antitrust analysis, in a question-and-answer session with reporters posted on the agency's Web site Tuesday.
