WIPO Panel Calls For Clarity In Privilege Laws

Law360, New York (March 30, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The lack of uniformity in national laws and practices governing privileged communications between intellectual property advisers and their clients is causing clients to risk loss of confidentiality and of privilege in countries where privilege exists, a committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization has found.

Different standards of privilege and its recognition are causing problems in dealing with and enforcing IP rights, WIPO's Standing Committee on the Law of Patents concluded on Friday after a weeklong session on IP issues.
