Indonesia's Troublesome New Patent Law

Law360, New York (August 31, 2017, 12:01 PM EDT) -- When Joko Widodo assumed Indonesia’s presidency in 2014, he promised a renewed focus on innovation and economic growth, recognizing astutely that “innovation is key to winning in global economic competition.” Following through on his pledge, he has, among other steps, named a special innovation adviser; announced 100 regional science, technology and innovation parks; and identified 42,000 federal regulations to be eliminated or updated.

But while President Widodo has made some noteworthy progress to encourage innovation in Indonesia, his government also has undermined its own strategic goals...
