Tough Road Ahead For Next USPTO Director

Law360 (April 17, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- As speculation swirls about possible candidates for director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the only certainty is that the next head of the office is going to assume a daunting to-do list.

The new director will be taking over an agency that is facing a massive backlog of pending applications, new questions over patentable subject matter, a bitter court battle stemming from its controversial rules for patent applicants and legislation that could overhaul the patent system.
