Chicago Mayor Vetoes "Big Box" Wage Law

Law360, New York (September 11, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley vetoed an ordinance Monday that would force Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other “big box” retailers to pay wages and benefits of $13 an hour by 2010.

The veto, the first in the mayor’s 17 years in office, will now face the city council, which supported that measure by a vote of 35-14. Thirty-four votes are needed to override a mayoral veto.
