By Brian Rubin and Adam Pollet (March 7, 2018, 12:36 PM EST) -- Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards the Oscars for movies, dissecting them into different classes and categories, such as best picture, best film editing and best original screenplay. Every year, we do something similar, dissecting the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's disciplinary actions to see how FINRA performed in different categories (although we are still looking for FINRA cases that involve special effects). Rather than having academy members cast votes, we review FINRA's monthly disciplinary reports, press releases and online database. In 2017, restitution more than doubled from the prior year, resulting in the fourth highest total sanctions assessed by FINRA over the past 10 years.
