But when Mergermarket released its list of financial firms advising on first-quarter deals Wednesday, the investment bank, launched just nine months ago by two ex-UBS AG bankers, found itself at No. 14, two spots ahead of its founders' old firm.

LionTree was propelled up the league tables by roles in two big deals, advising John Malone's Liberty Media Corp. on its $16 billion acquisition of Virgin Media and its $2.6 billion minority stake in Charter Communications.
