A Delaware federal judge released a written opinion Tuesday explaining that he had on Friday barred most U.S. sales of Medtronic Inc.'s allegedly infringing heart valve systems because rival Edwards Lifesciences AG was likely to win on the merits — a ruling Medtronic has already appealed to the Federal Circuit.

Medtronic Inc. on Monday asked the Federal Circuit to stay a preliminary injunction on U.S. sales of a heart valve system that Edwards Lifesciences AG claims infringes its catheter patent, claiming the ban jeopardizes patient health and misinterprets patent extension law.

Edwards Lifesciences Corp. on Wednesday asked a Delaware federal judge to award it additional damages and a permanent injunction against CoreValve Inc., alleging its rival was still infringing a patent for catheter heart valve technology despite the Federal Circuit recently upholding a $73.9 million verdict against CoreValve.
