A federal judge allowed three recreational groups to intervene Thursday in a lawsuit challenging a U.S. Forest Service plan for motorized vehicle trails in Idaho's Sawtooth National Forest, following the guidance of a Ninth Circuit ruling throwing out the so-called federal defendant rule.

Two environmental groups have hit the U.S. Forest Service with a lawsuit over its decision to designate nearly 1,200 miles of roads for motorized recreation use on the Minidoka Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho.
