There were eight intellectual property awards in 2014 that exceeded $100 million, all of them in patent cases, but attorneys say that many of those substantial sums are at risk of being reduced on appeal since the Federal Circuit has heightened its scrutiny of damages awards.

Medtronic CoreValve LLC urged a Delaware federal judge on Wednesday to reverse a "massive" $393 million jury verdict awarded to Edwards Lifesciences Corp. after a finding that Medtronic's CoreValve system willfully infringed Edwards' heart valve patent, saying the verdict was contrary to the clear weight of the evidence.
