The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreed Wednesday to expedite an update to its air quality standards for particulate matter emissions and issue a final rule by December — six months sooner than the deadline it was seeking from a D.C. federal court.

A Washington federal judge on Thursday clamped down on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying it has one week to sign off on proposed air quality standards for particulate air emissions and requesting a top official explain the agency's foot-dragging to the court next month.
