Dutch semiconductor maker NXP BV on Thursday said a Florida federal judge unfairly allowed BlackBerry Ltd. to argue to a jury about NXP's motives for bringing a patent suit against the smartphone maker and that it is entitled to a new trial.

A Florida federal jury on Monday ruled in favor of BlackBerry Ltd. in an intellectual property lawsuit brought by Dutch semiconductor manufacturer NXP BV, which had accused the smartphone maker of infringing three patents related to circuitry used in wireless communications.

A Florida federal judge ruled Tuesday that BlackBerry Ltd. cannot mention its ongoing inter partes review of a mobile phone patent owned by NXP BV at a trial to determine whether BlackBerry infringed the patent.
