A West Virginia federal judge on Monday sent a shareholder class action contesting Alpha Natural Resources Inc.'s $7.1 billion purchase of Massey Energy Co. back to state court, saying federal securities suits filed in state court cannot be heard by federal judges.

Alpha's $7.1B Massey Merger Draws Securities Class Claim
Alpha Natural Resources Inc. on Thursday removed to West Virginia federal court a putative securities class action brought by Massey Energy Co. shareholders who allege Alpha misrepresented production problems at a coal mine to artificially prop up its stock price before its $7.1 billion purchase of Massey.
