The American Medical Association on Friday asked a federal court to let it step in to defend Georgia's "prompt pay" law, which requires administrators of self-insured health plans to meet deadlines for paying or denying claims, against a challenge from the health insurance industry.

A health insurance trade association sued the Georgia Insurance & Safety Fire Commissioner's Office on Tuesday, seeking to prevent the state's "prompt pay" insurance statute from being extended to cover employers' self-funded plans and saying the change is preempted by federal law.
