The Patent Trial and Appeal Board ruled Tuesday that a SurfCast Inc. graphical user interface patent is invalid, in a win for Microsoft Corp., whose Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 operating systems are accused of infringing the patent.

Microsoft Corp. was hit Tuesday with a lawsuit in Maine federal court lodged by operating system design company SurfCast Inc., which claims its interface patent is infringed by the "live tiles" technology built into the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 operating systems.
