The U.S. Navy on Monday agreed to limit its activities at sea in order to protect whales, dolphins and other marine animals and settle two lawsuits brought by environmentalists who alleged some of those training exercises were harming vulnerable populations.

A Hawaii federal judge on Tuesday shot down a National Marine Fisheries Service decision to allow the U.S. Navy to use high powered sonar and conduct other training activities in the Pacific Ocean, saying the practices clearly impact endangered species.
