Nissan North America Inc., Mazda Motor of America Inc. and Subaru of America Inc. on Friday urged a California federal judge to pare further claims from a suit accusing the automakers of ripping off Signal IP's car safety patents, saying Signal admits the patent contains an error since its claim constructions contradict.

A California federal judge trimmed patent litigation against BMW of North America LLC and eight other automakers after patent holder Signal IP Inc. agreed to a partial judgment of invalidity after the court found a portion of the patent claims' terms to be indefinite during claim construction.

The U.S. business units of Asian car giants Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Kia Motors Corp., Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. were slapped with patent infringement complaints Tuesday in California federal court alleging they have flouted patents covering car safety and radar systems.
