A California federal judge trimmed patent litigation against BMW of North America LLC and eight other automakers after patent holder Signal IP Inc. agreed to a partial judgment of invalidity after the court found a portion of the patent claims' terms to be indefinite during claim construction.

A California federal judge on Friday trimmed patent holder Signal IP Inc.'s infringement suit against Mercedes-Benz USA LLC accusing the automaker's cars of using its car-safety patents, including one for a blind-spot radar, ruling Signal had not properly alleged willful infringement.

Patent holder Signal IP Inc. filed a slew of infringement suits Wednesday in California federal court against Ford Motor Co. and the U.S. arms of Mercedes-Benz, BMW Group and others, accusing their cars of using Signal's car safety patents, including for a blind spot radar.
